The LanPlays Android TV App: Install It Once, Skip the Browser Every Time
A dedicated LanPlay launcher for Android TV and Google TV: faster than typing a URL in the TV browser, and the exact same experience from that first tap.
· 6 min read
Until recently, hosting a game on LanPlay meant opening your TV's browser and typing lanplays.com — or having a laptop plugged into the screen. That works fine if the browser actually exists and loads fast, but not every TV does both. Now there's a better way: a dedicated Android TV app that launches straight from your home screen in one tap.
What the app actually is
It's not a different game catalogue. The LanPlay Android TV app is a launcher that puts the hosting screen exactly where it would be if you'd opened the browser yourself — the same room code, the same QR code, players join from their phones the same way, everything is identical. The only difference is how you get there.
If you've never used LanPlay, nothing changes for your players. They still don't install anything. They still scan a QR code from their phone's camera (or type the code on the join form), and their browser becomes the controller. The app is entirely for the host — a shortcut that bypasses the TV browser.
Why you'd want to install it
Your TV browser is sluggish. Some smart TVs ship with a browser that was hobbled by time constraints, and scrolling or loading a room sometimes feels like lag. Worse: some don't ship with a browser at all, which is why most hosts end up plugging a laptop into an HDMI cable and using that as a monitor. The app doesn't replace the laptop setup — it just gives Android TV users a cleaner option.
One tap instead of fumbling a remote. Typing a URL in a TV remote is miserable. Search-and-find the browser app in menus, wait for it to load, fight autocomplete. A dedicated app on the home screen cuts all that. You tap it, the room appears, you're hosting.
It's faster than asking "does this TV have a working browser?" If you're setting up a game in a new room, you don't have to scope out the TV first. Install the app beforehand and you have one guaranteed fast path, no questions.
How to install it
On any Android TV or Google TV device:
- Open the Google Play Store — find it on the home screen, or use voice search on a modern remote.
- Search for "LanPlays" — it appears as "LanPlays - Apps on Google Play".
- Tap Install.
Or search by package name if your device supports it: com.lanplays.tv.
You can also visit the Play Store listing directly, but searching from the device is usually faster.
After you install it
Open the app, and you're hosting. Room code and QR code appear immediately. Everyone with a phone scans the code or types the code and joins as a controller — exactly the same flow as the browser. When the round ends, pick another game or another room, no rejoining. Everything is free, no signups, nothing installed on anyone's phone.
If your TV isn't Android TV (say, a regular smart TV without this app, or a laptop you've plugged into a projector), the browser flow from lanplays.com is still where you go — that guide explains the full setup.
